an arch wherethro'

Proud Moment!

As I have written before, I wanted Ian to be involved with Scouting so I became involved again after many years away. It has been a true blessing for him (and therefore for me). Several weeks ago he was elected as "Senior Patrol Leader", the youth all other Scouts want to be their leader for the next six months. He led his first meeting last Tuesday night, and was in charge of the Troop activities during our two night camping trip this weekend. He did a GREAT job. He has a few of the older boys that are having a hard time "following" a kid half their size, and even one of the adult leaders is asking why we "need to do it that way." However, the group was more involved in the events this weekend then usual and several of the adult leaders from other Troops commented that Ian was "a natural leader." It all made a Dad proud.

The highlight of the weekend was Ian's selection as an Order of the Arrow member. It is a great honor for a Scout to be voted into the OA by his peers, and Ian was selected early. He still has to go through their "Ordeal" process, but he is so excited. He will do well. Keri was camping with us this weekend and was able to witness the selection process.

All of this is just one more indication that we have been truly blessed with Ian. On the one hand, he has trouble in school. Of course, it's not because he's not able to do the work. It's simply because no one at his school seems to have a clue about ADHD and are certainly not interested in assisting him to excel. On the other hand is the Scouting program that sees leadership potential and tries to encourage it. We are thankful for the positive influences of Scouting to counter the discouraging atmosphere of his school.
